Performance Trends of Sandbox Games in the US: Q1 2021 Insights

The first quarter of 2021 showcased interesting user engagement within the sandbox gaming category on Android in the United States. Sensor Tower provides a comprehensive look into the performance of the top five sandbox games during this period.

Roblox, developed by Roblox Corporation, maintained a strong revenue stream, peaking at $4.9M in the last week of December and ending the quarter with $2.7M. Downloads started at around 220K and experienced a gradual decrease to 130K, while weekly active users saw an upward trend from 8.7M to over 10M.

Minecraft by Mojang observed a revenue pattern with a starting point of $534K, dipping to around $308K, and closing the quarter with $322K. Downloads spiked to 99K in early February but later dropped to 19K. The game's active users increased significantly from 2M to 3.2M.

IMVU: Social Chat & Avatar app from IMVU, Inc. saw its revenue fluctuate, beginning at $193K and ending the quarter slightly lower at $171K. Downloads remained consistent with a high of 44K in mid-March, while active users hovered around the 240K mark.

ELECTRONIC ARTS' The Sims™ FreePlay generated revenues that started at $132K, reaching a high of $220K in mid-March, and closed the quarter at $177K. The game experienced a steady download count near the 23K mark and a slight decrease in active users from 72K to 68K.

Lastly, Avakin Life - 3D Virtual World by Lockwood Publishing Ltd began the quarter with revenue at $102K and saw an increase to $112K. Downloads saw a high of 24K in early February but ended the quarter at 21K. Active users remained stable with a slight decline from 93K to 83K.
